Surgida na Florida, Estados Unidos, Iced Earth faz uma combinação de elementos de Power Metal e Thrash. A formação da banda se deve ao Jon Schaffer, que com 16 anos originou o grupo, em 1985.
Spoiler 1: Iced Earth é uma daquelas bandas do tipo Hentai com polvo, entra e sai mais membro do que tudo.
Spoiler 2: Iced Earth é uma daquelas bandas que lançam zilhões de versões (com faixa bônus, CD bônus, DVD, etc.) de um mesmo álbum.
A formação original da banda foi composta por:
· Gene Adam [Vocal]
· Jon Schaffer [Guitarra de base]
· Bill Owen [Guitarra solo]
· Richard Bateman [Baixo]
· Greg Seymour [Bateria]
Antes de ser Iced Earth, a banda foi The Rose e depois Purgatory. Após descobrir que já exista uma banda sob o nome de Purgatory, Jon decide renomear a banda baseando-se numa lembrança de seu amigo, este que disse que “Iced” e “Earth” formavam um ótimo nome para uma banda.
Ainda em 1985 foram produzidas as duas primeiras demos “da banda” (Sob o nome de “Purgatory” e não Iced Earth), algo bem simples. A primeira intitulada de Burning Oasis e a segunda, Psychotic Dreams. A terceira demo sai 1986, a Horror Show (nome também de um dos seus álbuns de estúdio).
Os shows do Purgatory eram bem elaborados, atrações e efeitos que faziam a apresentação ser mais do que só música. Fantasias, fogos de artifício e mascotes eram exemplos disso.
Jon passou a buscar um contrato com uma gravadora. Viu nesse momento a necessidade de ter uma demo profissional para divulgar a banda. Daí surge a “Enter The Realm” que se destacou por possuir uma boa qualidade sonora.
Após distribuir 1000 cópias da demo para divulgação e venda pela América do Norte, Europa e outros locais veio o reconhecimento por parte do Underground. A demo foi eleita como a demo do ano pela revista Hard Rock Magazine. Em Junho de 1990, assinam um contrato com a Century Media, daí foi disparado o gatilho para o sucesso.
Durante uma turnê promocional, o Iced conheceu o líder da Blind Guardian, Hansi Kürsch. O que renderia planos entre as bandas e consequentemente parcerias.
Em 1991 sai o segundo álbum de estúdio, Night of the Stormrider. Após esse lançamento, a banda sai em turnê novamente com Blind Guardian.
A partir daí, Jon se dá conta que a banda não estava faturando o quanto deveria pelo tanto de esforço que fazia. Surge a ideia de que o dinheiro que a banda fazia quase não retornava para ela. A gravadora teria usado os ganhos para aliviar os prejuízos vindos de escolhas erradas, economicamente falando.
Para a gravação de seu terceiro álbum a banda conta com Matt Barlow. Todas as dificuldades fizeram com que o Burnt Offerings saísse 3 anos mais tarde (1995).
Em meio a tanto caos surge uma luz (para você que é trevoso, o oposto pode ser considerado), The Dark Saga. Sim, o álbum com base no personagem Spawn. Estava aí uma oportunidade mais que grande.
É possível ver duas principais vantagens que esse álbum possui, a primeira é a história que enriquece o trabalho, fazendo com que seja mais que somente um álbum. E a segunda é que essa ligação funciona como uma dupla divulgação, apreciadores da saga Spawn possuem a oportunidade de conhecer a banda, e curtidores da banda podem apreciar a saga.
A banda queria relembrar os trabalhos anteriores, desculpa esta que foi usada para regravar as músicas dos três primeiros álbuns e da demo e lançar a coletânea Days Of Purgatory (A referência chega a pulsar).
Em 1998, mais uma alta, o Something Wicked This Way Comes, o álbum que entrou para lista dos 20 mais vendidos da Alemanha.
Grécia, local presenteado com a gravação do álbum Alive in Athens (“Athens”, entendeu?). Para a gravação do álbum a banda tocou duas noite seguidas em Atenas (óbvio), ao final obtiveram mais de 30 músicas.
O álbum foi lançado em 1999 e em várias versões: CD duplo nos EUA; CD triplo na Europa e Japão; e 5 LP’s. O álbum foi tão bem sucedido que acabou ganhando o Disco de Ouro na Grécia (O que nenhuma banda dentro do metal conseguiu desde 1992).
Personagens de terror sempre foram a fixação de Jon, é daí que sai inspiração e fonte direta de material para o próximo álbum, Horror Show. Este debutou em 1º lugar na Grécia e abriu portas para a banda abrir as turnês do Judas Priest e Megadeth, seria uma pena se os atentados de 11 de setembro fizessem com que a turnê fosse cancelada.
Na enrolação até ocorrer a turnê, a banda conclui o lançamento do Tribute To The Gods, um álbum tributo contendo covers de músicas de bandas como AC/DC, Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath, Blue Öyster Cult, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest e Kiss. Este álbum foi lançado primeiro em 2001, na box Dark Genesis, juntamente com o Enter The Realm, Iced Earth, Night Of The Stormrider e Burnt Offerings, estes 4 últimos receberam novas capas e os 3 últimos foram remixados. O Tribute To The Gods só foi lançado separadamente em 2002.
Os atentados de 2001 influenciaram bastante na carreira da banda e principalmente no The Glorious Burden, álbum que já estava quase pronto, mas que teve de ter as faixas vocais regradas devido a saída do vocalista. Matt repensou sua vida e Jon ao ver que algo intrigava ele e atrapalhava a dar sua total dedicação, decidiu conversar com Matt, o que resultou em sua saída.
É aí que entra Tim, não, não é o Tim Maia, mas sim Tim Owens. Tornou-se o novo vocalista e a banda decidiu lançar o The Reckoning em 2003, single para matar a ansiedade e curar a decepção dos fãs, que já esperavam o lançamento do The Glorius Burden.
Em 2004, para não dizer que não lançaram nada, a banda lança uma coletânea de encher os olhos, The Blessed And The Damned conta com 23 músicas.
Decidido a desenvolver a história de Something Wicked (música divida em 3 partes) é lançado o Framing Armageddon estreando Ripper nos vocais.
Matt, que havia se tornado policial e vocalista da banda First State Force Band (se apresentava em escolas pregando ideais conservadores como o não uso de drogas [Quem diria], o não à violência e respeito aos pais e educadores), retorna aos vocais do Iced para cantar no The Crucible of Man (lançado em 2008) e tem sua volta anunciada no site oficial da banda.
Dystopia, lançado em 2011, apresentou um novo vocalista, Stu Block, além disso, teve várias de suas versões lançadas.
Rico em participações é o álbum Plagues of Babylon (lançado em 2014) que contou com a presença de Michael Poulsen (da banda Volbeat), Russell Allen (do Symphony X/Adrenaline Mob) e Hansi Kürsch (Blind Guardian) nos vocais juntamente com Jon e Stu. Além do cover de Highwayman da banda de mesmo nome, cantada originalmente por Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson e Waylon Jennings.
